Algie The Miner

Produced in 1912, this film has three directors credited which might explain its quirky jumps in scenes. Algie is played by Billy Quirk in a performance which got the film mentioned in the movie "The Celluloid Closet" which discussed gays in early movies that were otherwise straight.

As a serious reviwer, or I try to be, of western films, you could call me a buff, I guess, I occasionally dip into these very old little western themed films. Is this a gay man going West to win his fortune or is it a straight man fagging up his part for laughs. It's hard to tell. Looking at it through the eyes of the 1912 movie patron, I'd say the latter, but then again he does bring home a big burly miner with him. So who knows. Still, quite well done and fun. Enjoy.

Now I know where a certain tv presenter in the UK gets his stage persona from! 1912?? Its so amazing to be able to see this film and thats what, for me, this site is all about, that something like this film is accessible to all.

The film I found difficult to watch, film in it's infancy would be, but nonetheless entertaining and as far as the social history aspect to it, I find it amazing the main actor is outwardly gay.

For that aspect, the humour and the age of this film, I give it a high rating.
